Beacon
Reducing catastrophic and existential risk should come with minimal paperwork burdens.
Fiscal sponsorship for global catastrophic risk projects — so you don't have to build an organisation before you can start the work.
What we do
Beacon enables the best possible research into catastrophic and existential risk. We provide fiscal sponsorship, administrative and management overhead, and compliance infrastructure so researchers can focus on the work that matters.
We are relentlessly focused on catastrophic and existential risk, with a deep understanding of the funding and research ecosystem around it. We know what researchers and project directors need, and we want to give it to them and get out of the way.
Why Beacon
Researchers and project founders working on catastrophic risk face a choice: spend months incorporating a nonprofit, operate under a fiscal sponsor that doesn't understand the domain, or sacrifice independence to work within established institutions. The results are opportunity cost, preventable delays, and bottlenecks on getting good research done.
Beacon exists to close that gap. We combine fiscal sponsorship with deep GCR domain focus. When a project operates under Beacon, funders know that someone who understands the field has vetted it, and project leads get infrastructure that anticipates their needs rather than getting in their way.
The practical measure is researcher hours. Every hour a project lead spends incorporating an entity, reconciling a payroll run, or reverse-engineering a funder's reporting template is an hour not spent on the risk they set out to reduce. Beacon's job is to move those hours back.
Because we only take GCR work, we have usually seen a given funder's requirements before — and funders, in turn, know that a project operating under Beacon has been assessed by someone who understands the field. Projects housed together also share what they learn about running this kind of organisation, which is otherwise knowledge each project re-derives at its own expense.
